Gandhi adopted the path of nonviolent protests to gain independence for India following British colonial rule. He was shot and killed by a Hindu fanatic in January 1948 at the age of 78, five months after India won independence. India's leaders visit Gandhi's memorial, on the banks of the Yamuna River in New Delhi, to pay homage each year on Oct. 2. The memorial includes a black marble platform where an eternal flame burns.
