EU says South Stream talks tied to Russia obeying international law-report

European Energy Commissioner Oettinger speaks during a news conference after EU-Ukraine-Russia energy negotiations at the EU commission representation in Berlin Europe's Energy Commissioner said talks on the Russian South Stream gas pipeline planned by Gazprom are faltering, partly due to the Ukraine crisis, but will continue when Russia sticks to international law, a German newspaper said. Progress is stalled because Russia is not accepting European regulations in the energy sector and because "the crisis in Ukraine overlies everything", Guenther Oettinger said in an advance extract of an article due to be published in Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung on Sunday. "We'll continue discussions if the Russian partners comply with international law again and are prepared to cooperate constructively on the basis of our energy law," he said. He said controversial points of the South Stream pipeline, which Russia wants to build across the Black Sea to bypass gas transit nation Ukraine, were being discussed at the working level.

Cameron says can't guarantee UK will stay in EU if Juncker gets top job: magazine

Britain's Prime Minister Cameron arrives at an informal summit of European Union leaders in Brussels British Prime Minister David Cameron has warned he would no longer be able to guarantee that Britain would remain a member of the European Union if European leaders elect Jean-Claude Juncker as European Commission chief, Germany's Spiegel said. The European Commission president is selected by EU leaders but must be approved by the assembly, where Eurosceptics from the right made gains in last week's election. The European People's Party, which won the most seats in the vote, had chosen Luxembourg's ex-premier Juncker as their candidate. In a pre-publication copy of an article, Spiegel said Cameron had explained, on the sidelines of an EU summit in Brussels on Tuesday, that if Juncker became Commission president, he would no longer be able to ensure Britain's continued EU membership.

UK Researchers Develop 'Tractor Beam'

UK Researchers Develop 'Tractor Beam' A team of physicists at Scotland's Dundee University has turned science fiction into science fact by creating the first functioning acoustic tractor beam. Until now tractor beams - devices with the ability to attract one object to another from a distance - have only featured in science fiction films, plausible only in the other worlds, planets and galaxies featured in the likes of Star Trek and Star Wars. Working with colleagues at Southampton University and Illinois Wesleyan University, researchers from Dundee University have used energy from an ultrasound array to exert force behind an object and pull it towards the energy source. Dr Christine Demore, from the Institute for Medical Science and Technology at Dundee, said: "This is the first time anyone has demonstrated a working acoustic tractor beam and the first time such a beam has been used to move anything bigger than microscopic targets.

Studies show promise for new drugs in lung, leukemia, ovarian cancers

FILE - In this Sept. 5, 2013 file photo, an infusion drug to treat cancer is administered to a cancer patient via intravenous drip at Duke Cancer Center in Durham, N.C. According to a study that was discussed Saturday, May 31, 2014, at a cancer conference in Chicago, Eli Lilly and Co.'s experimental drug Cyramza has extended the life of patients with advanced lung cancer who relapsed after standard chemotherapy. (AP Photo/Gerry Broome, File) For the first time in a decade, an experimental drug has extended the lives of patients with advanced lung cancer who relapsed after standard chemotherapy. But the drug used in the study gave patients just six extra weeks of life on average, and costs $6,000 per infusion as currently sold to treat a different form of cancer. —The drug Imbruvica, sold by Pharmacyclics Inc. and Janssen Biotech, substantially improved survival and could set a new standard of care for relapsed chronic lymphocytic leukemia, or CLL, the most common leukemia in adults. Doctors say the pill more precisely targets cancer and is a good option for older people who can't tolerate standard chemotherapy infusions.

Russia says international monitors should stay in Ukraine, where 2 mission teams are missing

Ukrainian army paratroopers move to position in Slovyansk, Ukraine, Saturday, May 31, 2014. The Ukrainian Acting Defence Minister said on Friday that troops had ousted separatists from southern and western parts of the Donetsk region and north of the Luhansk region. (AP Photo/Efrem Lukatsky) MOSCOW - Russia's Foreign Ministry criticized a suggestion by an official that an international monitoring body could withdraw its observer mission from Ukraine because of safety concerns, as shooting between government troops and pro-Russian rebels continued in the region on Saturday. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe says it lost contact on Thursday with a group of five monitors in separatist eastern Ukraine. Wolfgang Ischinger, the OSCE's negotiator on national dialogue in Ukraine, told German broadcaster ZDF this week that the monitor mission might have to withdraw if the organization fears for its employees' lives. Confrontations continued Saturday between government troops and the rebels, who have seized administrative and police buildings across the east and want to join the region to Russia.

Canada will not fund abortion abroad, issue too divisive, PM says

Canada's PM Harper speaks during the closing news conference for a summit in Toronto By Randall Palmer OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada will refrain from funding abortions abroad as it promotes maternal and children's health in poor countries because the issue is too divisive and could undermine a broader push to save lives, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said on Friday. The Conservative leader has resolutely resisted any attempt to restrict abortions in Canada, where the procedure is legal, but he has acquiesced to demands from within his caucus not to promote abortion in other countries. Speaking at the end of a summit he organized in Toronto on the health of mothers and children, Harper said the world community was mobilized to make rapid progress in reducing mortality rates of mothers and their babies and he did not want to get sidetracked by abortion. "We all know very well how divisive that issue is, not just in Canada - I can assure you it's equally divisive around the world ... We're obviously not going to embark on something that's going to cause widespread division," Harper told reporters.

Norway rejects Greenpeace appeal against Statoil drilling

Norway gave Statoil the go-ahead to start drilling the world's most northerly oil well in the Barents Sea by rejecting an appeal by environment group Greenpeace to block the exploration. Oil drillers in Norway are moving further north as mature fields in the south deplete and the Arctic ice retreats opening new areas that were previously unaccessible. A Ministry of Climate and Environment spokesman on Friday confirmed a statement from Statoil that it had rejected Greenpeace's appeal and drilling could go ahead. Greenpeace had argued that Statoil's drilling plans posed a threat to Bear Island, an uninhabited wildlife sanctuary that is home to rare species including polar bears, as an oil spill would be nearly impossible to clean up in the Arctic because of the harsh conditions. Muslims pray to turn Turkey's greatest monument back into a mosque

Local and foreign tourists visit the Byzantine monument of Hagia Sophia, or Ayasofya, which is now a museum in Istanbul By Ayla Jean Yackley ISTANBUL (Reuters) - It has served as the exalted seat of two faiths since its vast dome and lustrous gold mosaics first levitated above Istanbul in the 6th Century: Christendom's greatest cathedral for 900 years and one of Islam's greatest mosques for another 500. Today, the Hagia Sophia, or Ayasofya in Turkish, is officially a museum: Turkey's most-visited monument, whose formally neutral status symbolises the secular nature of the modern Turkish state. But tens of thousands of Muslim worshippers gathering there on Saturday hope it will again be a mosque, a dream they believe Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan can fulfil. "This is a serious push to break Ayasofya's chains," said Salih Turan, head of the Anatolia Youth Association, which has collected 15 million signatures to petition for it to be turned back into a mosque.

Sixth Great Extinction: Humans Speed Up Species Extinction Rate 1,000-Fold

Sixth Great Extinction: Humans Speed Up Species Extinction Rate 1,000-Fold The rate of extinction of species on Earth is around 1,000 times faster it was before humans existed, new reseach has shown. Concentrating on the rate, not the number, of species disappearing from Earth, Pimms' team calculated a "death rate" of how many species become extinct each year out of one million species.
