Rotifers rank among tardigrades as the smallest creatures in the animal kingdom. The winning photo, captured by Rogelio Moreno, a programmer and self-taught microscopist from Panama, shows the open mouth of a rotifer surrounded by a heart-shaped corona, or a crown of cilia that sweep water into its maw. Moreno watched the rotifer for hours, waiting for the right opportunity to snap a shot of the constantly moving creature at the moment it opened its mouth, according to Nikon.

Death or Full Recovery? Ebola Outcome May Depend on Your Genes

Death or Full Recovery? Ebola Outcome May Depend on Your Genes People infected with Ebola vary greatly in how severe their symptoms are. Now, a new study in mice suggests that genetics plays a role in how each body reacts to the same Ebola virus. To study the relationship between genes and the virus, researchers used a group of mice that were bred to have high genetic diversity, as opposed to the typical laboratory mice, which are produced by many generations of inbreeding and are therefore extremely similar. Normally, classic lab mice don't develop the symptoms of Ebola that are seen in people, even though the animals do die from a lethal dose of the virus.

Ukraine's Poroshenko backs Yatseniuk for new term as prime minister

Ukraine's President Poroshenko talks to Prime Minister Yatseniuk after a wreath laying ceremony at the Unknown Soldier's Tomb in Kiev By Richard Balmforth KIEV (Reuters) - Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko threw his support behind Arseny Yatseniuk for a new term as prime minister on Friday, ending speculation that he would seek to try to bring in his own candidate as head of a new pro-Europe, reformist government. Ukraine won a vital breathing space by sealing an interim gas supply deal with Russia on Thursday that will see it through winter, but the new Kiev government faces a mountain of other problems, not least pro-Russian insurrection in eastern areas. Poroshenko offered his quick backing for Yatseniuk after the 40-year-old former economy and foreign minister, whose People's Front ended slightly ahead of the President's own bloc in an election last Sunday, had bluntly said he expected to stay on. The move confirmed that the partnership between the two men will dominate Ukraine's political landscape in the near future as it battles a separatist rebellion in the east and pursues a course for European integration deeply opposed by Russia.

Daimler buys into Agusta as motorbike and car tech converge

Chairman of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz cars Dieter Zetsche attends a news conference on media day at the Paris Mondial de l'Automobile By Edward Taylor FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Daimler AG will buy 25 percent of Italian motorcycle maker MV Agusta - the latest sign that motorbike and car technologies are converging, driven by a push to lower emissions and improve safety. Daimler said on Friday it would buy the stake via its Mercedes-AMG performance cars unit and take a seat on the board at Agusta - a legendary name in the sport of motorcycling, having won at least 75 world championship rider and constructor titles. It did not disclose the financial terms and said it was part of a broader cooperation deal between high-end brands Mercedes and Agusta which would mainly focus on marketing and sales. Daimler says Agusta's motorbike engines are unlikely to be used in its Mercedes passenger cars any time soon - however tougher anti-pollution rules have increased interest among carmakers in the lightweight construction technology and compact engines, which could be used as "range extender" add-ons to complement electric engines in hybrid vehicles.

South Sudan famine temporarily averted, but risks remain - U.N.

By Drazen Jorgic NAIROBI (Reuters) - Aid and some small harvests have helped stave off a feared famine in South Sudan, but any more fighting there could still leave millions facing severe hunger next year, a senior World Food Programme (WFP) official said on Friday. The United Nations had warned in May that up to 4 million people would be on the brink of starvation by the end of 2014, after months of clashes threatened harvests and shut down aid programmes. Development agencies launched a huge appeal and the response, together with rainfall, meant that "what was speculated about famine ... (has been) temporarily averted," WFP's South Sudan deputy country director, Eddie Rowe, told Reuters. Read More http://ift.tt/1udrC6z

Brraaiins! How Zombies Overran Pop Culture

Brraaiins! How Zombies Overran Pop Culture Unlike Dracula or Frankenstein, these Halloween monsters aren't based on a literary resource. In fact, the modern conception of a zombie dates back to 1968, in a movie that doesn't so much as use the word: George Romero's "Night of the Living Dead." "He didn't call them zombies, and he didn't think about them as zombies," said Ozzy Inguanzo, a screenwriter and author of "Zombies on Film: The Definitive Story of Undead Cinema" (Rizzoli, 2014). Since then, the walking undead have wormed their way into video games, comic books — and even the classics (witness 2009's novel "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies).

US Salamander Hotspot Could Fall to New Disease

US Salamander Hotspot Could Fall to New Disease A newly described fungal disease is killing salamanders and newts in Europe and could soon land on U.S. The disease invades the skin of salamanders and newts, and is related to another fungus that has been wiping out frog and other amphibian populations around the world. "If it gets here, it's going to be really bad," said Karen Lips, a biologist at the University of Maryland who participated in the new research. That's because the United States is home to the world hotspot of salamander diversity: More species of salamander live in the southern Appalachian Mountains than anywhere else on the planet, according to the North Carolina-based Highlands Biological Station.

NASA Spacecraft's Grave on the Moon Found (Photo)

NASA Spacecraft's Grave on the Moon Found (Photo) A NASA spacecraft has spotted the place where one of its brethren slammed into the surface of the moon six months ago. The agency's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) photographed a new lunar crater that researchers say is the grave of NASA's LADEE probe, which ended its mission with an intentional crash onto the moon's surface on April 18, 2014. LADEE's grave lies about 0.5 miles (0.8 kilometers) from the eastern rim of the larger Sundman V crater, just 0.2 miles (0.3 km) north of the spot where mission team members predicted the spacecraft would go down based on tracking data, NASA officials said. "I'm happy that the LROC team was able to confirm the LADEE impact point," LADEE project manager Butler Hine, of NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California, said in a statement.
